Inspired by the artwork of renowned Swiss artist Jean Tinguely, participants will collaborate to create a kinetic metal “Sound Sculpture.” Tinguely created whimsical machine-like contraptions made from found metal objects he called “metamechanics.” Participants will plan, test and develop ideas to compose a work of art that is functional. When completed each piece will have a very unique metallic and mechanical “voice.”
The activity will require early engineering skills, problem solving, and creative critical thinking. Math skills including spatial reasoning, patterns, and awareness of shape will need to be utilized. In addition to these content areas, participants will create artworks that use organizational principles and functions to solve specific visual arts problems.
